What are some of the many benefits of karate?
What are some of the many benefits of karate?

Physical fitness
There is no doubt that karate will improve your stamina, strength, cardiovascular health, flexibility, and reflexes. Karate will help both children and adults develop stronger bodies, tone muscles, improve physical coordination and fine tune motor skills.
Discipline and Control
At the heart of every goal and accomplishment is self-discipline. Despite what many think, self discipline is a learned behaviour. One of the most valuable benefit of karate is self-discipline and control. These important qualities will, over time, translate into long term success in multiple areas of life (school, career, relationships, personal goals).
Focus and Listening
When you are actively training in karate, for that hour or two nothing else matters. Again, greater focus and concentration is something that can be improved with practice and can be used outside of your time in the dojo. Karate helps children with short attention spans to develop better focus, concentration, and listening skills.
Respect
Ingrained in the tradition of martial arts is respect - respect for your instructors and respect for your fellow students. For children in karate, we also also emphasize the importance of respect for parents, teachers, and peers.
Perseverance
Skill level in karate is measured by one's progression up the ladder of coloured belts - all the way to the ultimate goal of black belt. Striving for the next level requires one to constantly set higher and higher goals...and then actively take steps to achieve them.
Self-esteem
Confidence is the difference between feeling scared and feeling unstoppable. It grows every time we are successful in achieving our goals and when we push ourselves to greater heights. Every time a student perfects a challenging technique, learns a new skill, or obtains a higher belt, his or her confidence multiplies.
Teamwork
Although karate may seem like an individual activity, teamwork is actually required more often than you may assume. Whether you are working on basic techniques together, performing partner work or sparring, or competing as a team at tournaments, karate students rely on each other to learn and refine all techniques and skills.
Social Interaction
It is always easier to to get to know people and make new friends when you're in a room filled with peers who share a common interest. Long lasting friendships are often formed in our dojo.
Awareness
Karate teaches "Zanshin" - being in a state of awareness or relaxed alertness both physically and mentally. Seeing, feeling, and listening to your body (internally) and surroundings (externally) will allow you to tap into your own intuition and courage.
